The 18 songs on Rundman's Insomniaccomplishments CD are a new father's chronicle of sleep-deprivation and perseverance, fearlessly exploring diverse genres from Americana to garage-pop to prog-rock and choral music. The album is a testament to the musical adventurousness that has likened Jonathan Rundman to everyone from Neil Young to Liz Phair to Marshall Crenshaw to Giant Sand. For the past decade, music journalists from coast to coast have raved about Rundman's unusual wordplay, inventive instrumentation, and addictive melodies. This new release finds Rundman experimenting with even more diverse influences, from Scandinavian folk songs, to Hammond-organ-powered prog, to acapella compositions, all tied together with a home-spun attitude.
The album's release comes at the close of a very exciting 2008. Jonathan Rundman began the year featured on the Paste Magazine CD Sampler (December/January issue) along with like-minded songwriters Liam Finn, Ingrid Michaelson, and Jens Lekman. The appearance of Rundman's song Front Row At The Fashion Show on the magazine sampler led to the track's licensure by Starbuck's Coffee for airplay in 10,000 Starbuck's locations around the globe.
In March, Rundman made his first appearance at the South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX, where he performed at the annual Swollen Circus showcase along with some of his musical heroes The Silos, Syd Straw, Tom Freund, and Peter Buck and Mike Mills of REM.
April 2008 found Rundman in a New York Times article, included in a musical playlist along with other spiritually savvy songwriters such as Vigilantes Of Love, Pedro The Lion, and Bob Dylan. The New York Times piece commended Rundman's bright, catchy, indie-pop.
2008 marks the 16-year anniversary of Rundman's career as a national touring musician. His previous studio release, 2004's Public Library, was recorded in New York City with legendary Americana band The Silos. Public Library turned up on the Best Local Albums of the Year list in the St. Paul Pioneer Press as well as the City Pages, and was acclaimed in national publications like Paste and Performing Songwriter.
